The Pit Bull Biting Power Controversy
Bite Power without the BullWhether a chihuahua or gator mouth pit bull, canine biting power comes from the development of the masseter muscles (cheek muscles) that close the jaw.
Back alley breeders often brag that their bulls bite with 2000 pounds per square inch (psi). Hard biting varies among individual animals, but even a much larger bull mastiff has a biting power of around 550 psi according to a National Geographic program about prehistoric predators. The show also tested a Dutch shepherd bite at 230 psi and an athletically built pit bull at 305 psi.
Schutzhund bite receivers, who wear padded sleeves, find no significant biting power difference between pit bulls and other similar sized dogs. However, this very determined breed is physically strong with a tendency to bite deep, hold firm and shake.
Known as lion hunters, Rhodesian Ridgebacks are also rumored to have a strong bite. Some say the pups have a stronger bite than a doberman. In the film SEARCH DOG'S RAVEN:, Ebbey the canine actor shows off some fang while fending off a wounded mountain lion.
Playing the search dog, Ebbey has a leading role in the eerie action thriller Search Dog's Raven. Her character is paramount, because the key to unlocking the film's unique twist turns out to be the 'Search Dog's...Raven.
