Ebbey the Canine Actor: Ebbey Photos About Adopting Strays

Search Dog's Raven Silver and blue stylized Dog Logo Ebbey plays a search dog in the new film SEARCH DOG'S RAVEN: the Eerie Story of a Wilderness Search Dog Team.
Adopting a Stray

A black muzzled Rhodesian Ridgeback cross, Ebbey the canine actor stands in a dry grassy field.

Taking in a stray can be rewarding for both you and the animal. Before keeping a stray, please consider the following:

1. It is your moral and legal obligation to try and find the original owner. Yes, they may be bad people, but you must still contact local shelters and put found notices in the newspaper. You may have found someone's beloved pet who may be lost through no fault of the owner.

2. If no one claims the animal, can you afford to keep the dog. This includes good quality food and regular medical care.

3. If you have other animals in the household, make sure to get the stray checked before exposing it to your healthy pets. Lice, fleas, mange and other contagious conditions are not uncommon with strays.

4. Some strays will need training or retraining. Are you willing and do you have time?

5. Some strays will need to be house trained again. Are you willing and do you have time?

5. Does the dog fit your lifestyle and will they be included in many aspects of your life. Sure their life is now better with you than on the street, but they still need attention, maintenance and lots of exercise. Remember a good dog is a tired dog.

6. Do you have enough patience? Many strays have been abandoned, abused or attacked and do not respond well to strong words or discipline. Because of these factors, it can also take longer to train or retrain a stray. Search Dog's Raven Poster
