A recent New York Times article
So You Think You Can Just Adopt a Dog? reveals that some shelters and rescue groups are becoming very picky when it comes to potential dog adopters.
When adopting Ebbey, owner Allex Michael went through a rescue society. Allex had owned a dog previously and grown up with dogs. She also had an old healthy dog living in the house when the lady brought Ebbey over for a home inspection visit. Allex has no children and there was a large fenced yard for Ebbey. Upon entering the house, the lady saw several dog beds, dog toys etc. So allowing Allex to adopt Ebbey was not an issue for Ebbey's rescuer.
However, many dogs do not end up in this kind of environment. First time dog owners may not understand the commitment of owning a dog, renters may not always have a place to live with the dog and not all dogs can go to people with children. Rescue groups may go overboard with their approval process, and individual personalities are always part of the mix, but they basically just want to find the dog a good and permanent home.
