Ebbey the Canine Actor: Ebbey Photos About Adopting a Stray Dog Ebbey surveys the field for coyotes. Just two minutes after this photo was taken, a guy came up and warned that several coyotes were tracking us. I then put Ebbey back on the leash. Every year, millions of unwanted and abandoned strays wander the streets, facing starvation, dehydration, weather extremes and many other dangers including vehicles and abuse. Some are killed or die from injuries. Some are sold for scientific experimentation and suffer a painful death. Some end up in shelters.
Shelters, even the best ones, are very stressful for a dog. There is the constant barking, the strange environment and one to two workers may care for over a hundred animals. Most shelters are overcrowded and in many cities, many more dogs are euthanized than adopted. This includes friendly adoptable dogs and purebreds.
All of us have heard horror stories about adopting a dog from a shelter or rescue society. There is no guarantee about the animal's behavior problems, traits or health and you can adopt a HUGE PROBLEM. Though one of the sweetest dogs, most people couldn't have coped with adopting Ebbey, who is now a canine actor (just read her Biography.) Horror story adoptions make the news. However there are many more successful shelter adoptions that you never hear about. Strays can be a challenge, but you always have the satisfaction of knowing you've given them a new chance on life. So if you are already thinking about getting a dog, and can provide a permanent home, please consider adopting a stray.
