Bathing Dogs with Allergies

Despite an initial fear of water, Ebbey now loves to play in the water. She even retrieves sticks from the water...that is when SHE feels like it.

Allex Michael: Dogs with allergies and other skin conditions shouldn't be bathed too frequently. Some people with allergy prone dogs use or are prescribed medicinal shampoo. I did not go this route with Ebbey as her system generally overreacts to most medications. It is important to use a shampoo made for dogs. (Believe it or not, most human shampoos have harsh ingredients, including many baby shampoos.) Ebbey had her first bath only recently, due to concerns she would react to the shampoo. I was pleasantly surprised that a product called Gold Medal Pets Oatmeal shampoo for relieving dry itching skin did not cause any reaction. Though Ebbey is allergic to oatmeal as a food, she did not react to oatmeal shampoo for dogs.

Use shampoo sparingly and always make sure to rinse extremely well. Shampoo residue can magnify previous skin conditions and further irritate the skin. Blow drying can also cause problems. Ebbey was bathed during the summer, when temperatures are hot and she can air dry. Otherwise, dry the dog with several towels and then wrap them in a blanket until dry.
