Ebbey the Canine Actor: Ebbey Photos About Allergies Always make every attempt to discover the allergen and reducing or avoiding exposure vs just treating the symptoms. Avoid foods that cause the allergy. If environmental allergies like pollen is the culprit, keep the dog indoors when it's windy or walk the dog early in the morning when pollen is less likely. Otherwise your dog's life will be filled with expensive cortisone shots, antihistamines and steroid prescriptions. Almost all drugs have side effects and their long term use must be carefully considered.
Ebbey did not react well to vet prescribed antihistamines or a cortisone shot (which didn't help). There were several days where the itching was so bad that I gave her an antihistamine which then made her sleep all day. (Due to their low body fat, most ridgebacks have a stronger reaction to drugs than other dogs. Though Ebbey is a cross, she also seems to overreact to medications.)
Allergies are not curable, but by reducing or avoiding exposure you can minimize your dog's symptoms. This is the best way to hopefully reduce medication or keep them med free.
