Allergies to Food Groups

Dogs with food allergies tend to be sensitive to specific food groups. For example beef and dairy proteins or chicken and eggs. This is why lamb and rice was a popular low allergen food for such a long time.

Allex Michael: When I first adopted Ebbey, she was very pleased to eat her homemade cooked chicken and vegetable diet with potatoes, carrots and various other cooked veges. After finally suspecting allergies, I switched her to beef and rice. After a few months her allergy symptoms finally started to lessen. I was very grateful as lamb was my next choice and it is much more expensive than beef. As it turns out Ebbey is allergic to lamb.

It's important to realize that allergy symptoms from the food (Ebbey's chicken) can continue for several weeks to a month after eliminating it from the diet. So don't expect over night results. Now that Ebbey is doing well, I can test one new food every week or two and see an immediate increase in her level of scratching. Because her allergies are under control, and her overall health is good, the symptoms usually disappear by the next day. She also rarely ever vomits. I also closely monitor her ears for an increase in ear wax production which is also an indicator of allergens in many dogs.
